After months of the 9-to-5 grind without a break, it is natural to start thinking about your next time off (sometimes it even happens moments after you return from your last time off). Instead of booking the usual indulgent vacation, maybe you should consider choosing a retreat.

There are so many types of retreats offered since wellness tourism is booming right now. Whatever fine-tuning your soul needs, you can possibly find it at a yoga retreat, cycling retreat, surf retreat, Ayurvedic retreat, meditation retreat, spiritual retreat, healing retreat, or even an entrepreneurs’ retreat.

Retreats are your time to both get away and journey within. They are important because you have an opportunity to refresh your perspective, regroup, re-energize, and rejuvenate your passion for living. If you are reading this, most likely you are already familiar with the benefits of a retreat and the question isn’t should you go on a retreat, but which retreat should you choose.

Decide your activity

First things first, decide what you want to do! As I mentioned earlier, there are so many types of retreats being offered. So it is important to really think about what activity you want to do during your retreat, because trust me, you will be doing a lot of it! Whether your passion is food, yoga, nature, spirituality, art, culture, or adventure, there is a perfect retreat out there for you.

Pick a location

When picking a location, you don’t need to know the exact place, but you should think about the kind of destination you want to go to. Does your perfect retreat setting involve being by the beach, in the city, or out in nature? Whatever you pick, use that ideal setting to narrow down to some potentials. Once you find a few options, consider if there may be a nearby place you want to explore in your free time. That might make all the difference.

Get to know who is guiding the retreat

On my first retreat, I decided to go with a teacher I was practicing with regularly and was familiar with her style. For me, that was the deciding factor for me to choose that retreat. It’s okay if you don’t have a teacher you practice with who is running a retreat. Just make sure to educate yourself on the instructor you would potentially be going with. Learn about their style and don’t be afraid to reach out with any questions or concerns! You want to be excited to learn from you retreat teacher!

Consider the focus and size of the retreat

Each retreat is different. Some are huge and some are smaller. Some keep you busy with lots of activities while others allow for you to chill out and do your own thing. Others may be focused on self-development or physical activity. Also consider how involved in the group you would like to be, and how much you-time do you want each day (if any).
Retreat size is also a key factor. Some retreats are more intimate with less than ten attendees, while others could be up to 40 people. Decide which group setting would be more ideal for you. It really does make a difference.

Decide on your budget

Finding the right retreat for you doesn’t have to be expensive. If you are on a strict budget, there are many affordable options out there. Retreats come at a variety of price points and timelines, so really think about how much you want to spend. Something to consider is that most retreats are all-inclusive except for additional costs like airfare and transportation. This is great because it allows for you to be aware of the trip cost upfront with fewer surprises.

If not now, when?

Don’t forget to consider the timing of the retreat! Beyond picking the right time for your schedule, it is important to decide when to go since it can impact many factors. Though off-season might be more affordable, it may not offer the most optimal weather. In order to find the right time to go, I recommend you consider your ideal weather conditions, preferred outdoor activities, and budget for accommodations.

How long you want to be away?

This is an important one! Just as there are many types of retreats, they also are on different time frames. From a long weekend to a 10 day retreat, you decide how long you need to go for. Take a moment to consider what amount of time is right for you. Just keep in mind that longer does not mean better.

Do it for you

A retreat is a very personal experience especially since it is for your own development and growth. As much fun as it might sound to experience a retreat with a friend, make sure you are doing this for you. You are investing in this experience, so make sure you are able to be present to get a lot out of it!
