How to Create Your Own Morning Routine | health is wellth

If you have been following me for awhile, you already know that I love my morning routine. Whether it involves a hydrating beverage, meditation, yoga, or intention journaling, my morning hours have been crafted for my interests and priorities. So why did I decide to start a morning routine? Because of the many benefits of a good morning routine, including better mental health, lower stress levels, and increased energy. Since I started to upgrade my mornings, I am now more energized and excited to start my day. Maybe that’s why so many highly successful individuals and celebrities also thank their morning routine for their increased productivity. So maybe it is time to start your own!

First, let me start by saying there is more to getting ready for the day, than just rolling out of bed with barely enough to time to get to work. Trust me, because that used to be me on the regular.

Whatever your current (or nonexistent) morning routine is, it sets the tone for your day. By prepping your mind and body during your first waking moments, you can put yourself in the right mindset to fulfill your intentions, face your challenges, and achieve your goals each day. Wake up early

Figure out a time you should wake up to get your morning started in an relaxed way without any stress (while resisting the snooze button). If waking up early is particularly hard for you, start small (and even consider going to sleep earlier to help compensate). Instead of waking up an 1 hour early, start by waking up 15 mins early — and perhaps going to sleep 15 minutes earlier. If you are feeling pretty good after doing that for a week, add a few more minutes. Keep going until you gradually work up to your desired wake time. Over time, that earlier wake up won’t feel like such a big deal. 


I love drinking a morning tonic, celery juice, or peppermint tea first thing in the a.m. after waking up. This is because it is important to revitalize your body and replenish fluids lost during sleep. But don’t forget about good ol’ H2O! A glass of water first thing in the morning hydrates your body and brain (which is 75% water), which then boosts your metabolism, energy levels, and improves your focus.

Meditate on it

Meditation can be a great addition to your mornings. It helps to foster a non-judgmental awareness of yourself, your feelings, and your surroundings, by giving you the space to gain perspective and manage emotions in your everyday life. The best part is that as little as 3 minutes of meditation can change your brain and your life. Don’t just take my word for it, it’s scientifically proven

Move your body

Once you get up, go ahead and get moving. Maybe heading to the studio is not realistic for you and your schedule, but you can get a sweat on from the comfort of your own home (and in as little as 10 mins) with these online and streaming workouts. If working out in the morning is hard for you time-wise, try the wake up routine above along with laying out your clothing the night before. That way it is one less thing you have to think about the next day!

Give thanks

Gratitude practice may seem trendy, but it is shown to improve both your physical and psychological health. Whether through visualization, affirmation, or journaling, a gratitude practice can increase your self-esteem and mental strength. If you are completely new to this, I highly recommend starting with a 3 minute journal for intention setting. It is a great tool for goal setting to help you visualize your daily success.

Quality time

Spending quality time with your partner, family, or friends can really set a positive tone for your day. Whether it is face-to-face or virtually, this is a great way to bring those that are important to you as part of your routine. Plus, it’s something you can share together! Go ahead and get creative on how to use this uninterrupted time to connect with each other before the day begins.

Fuel your body

You’ve already heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so make sure you are fueling your body right. That could involve avoiding the daily morning brew, or figuring out your pre- and post-workout nutrition. Whatever it is, feed your body what it needs so you have the focus and energy to get things done. Tip: try prepping your ingredients the night before if your breakfast is more involved like a juice or smoothie.

Learn something new

Try to reserve some of that newly-discovered, productive morning time for some self-improvement. Before work and family responsibilities start vying your attention, try listening to a podcast, reading, or practicing a new skill. It will brighten your day and expand your mind!

As good as all of these activities are in the morning, don’t expect yourself to do them all (or even everyday)! Start with 1 to 2 activities and modify from there, otherwise if you start with too many, you will get burned out. Also, don’t stress about making your routine perfect. I personally have multiple routines that I rotate through depending on how I’m feeling. So use this as an opportunity to try things out and find what works best for you!

Whatever it may be, make sure to fill your mornings with what makes you feel good. Once you find a routine that you enjoy, you are more likely to continue doing it out of habit. Then it becomes natural to do it everyday!
